Every year Monaco holds a two-day championship dog show in the Circus tent in Fontvieille. It's part of what is known as the Riviera circuit: Monaco, San Remo in Italy and Frejus in France. Exhibitors can enter their dogs in three different shows in three different countries over a period of one week and so stand the chance of points towards their dogs' international titles. Today and tomorrow the show is on in Monaco.
A little quiz - no, I'm not Isabella, and this isn't Naples, Florida DP and goodness, it's not even Tuesday but I'm borrowing Isabella's brilliant quiz idea (just for one day, Isabella?) to ask if anyone knows what breed of dog this is. Woof woof.

My best guess would be a neapolitan mastiff - based on watching the dog shows from Madison Square Garden.
ReplyDeleteSome sort of Dogue perhaps? Dogue de Bordeaux?
ReplyDeleteTheir faces look so sad..
Are you involved with judging, showing etc. Jilly?
Angela
PS Go get a look at the obedience collars on Ming of NY's blog.
Ok, I'll allow it this time ;-)
ReplyDelete(but to reciprocate, you are disqualified from my next quiz, which also requires a dog identification! I told you we were kindred spirits ;-))
I think ramblingaround is right - these pudgie fellows, just slightly resembling a hippo, must be mastiffs, although I never realized how short their legs are...
What amazing looking dogs! Don't think I've seen ones like this before.
ReplyDeleteI think they are mastiffs too. I've seen them a few times before. HUGE dogs but so gentle and sweet.
ReplyDeleteObviously I'm going to have to come up with a rare breed - which I will (!) as I photographed several today. These are Neapolitan Mastiffs of course. You are a knowledgeable doggy lot.
ReplyDeleteJilly x
They actually are a wee bit comical in appearance--most unusual!
ReplyDeleteJilly, If I hadn't been watching dog shows on Animal Planet or whatever channel it was, I would have had absolutely NO idea. But Mastiff popped into my head immediately. Then I showed the picture to my son, and he agreed. I would have assumed they were a dog/hippo cross! Very unusual dogs, but TV is so educational (in some respects), and dog shows are a lot more entertaining that most of the rest of what is on TV! Thanks for sharing that photo.
ReplyDeleteI am just flabbergasted by th huge arms on these dogs! That is great that someone else knew the kind og dog because i lost my dog book as I tried looking it up jus now - admittedly cheating haha but I had no clue and I wish I could see these in person - I love dogs!
ReplyDeleteI thought they were bloodhounds but never mind.
