Big Boys' Toys...

...or should this post be called Cars and Boats and Planes, tra la la - except I think that song was Trains and Boats and Planes, wasn't it?

I walked around the main port of Monaco today. Never have I seen so many yachts - in the port, spilling out of the port, out at sea. In addition, there are three or four massive massive cruise liners - one in port, the others anchored out at sea. Most of the yachts in the section of the port in this photograph had crews hard at work cleaning up and preparing to the next playground, ready for the owner to jet in and have fun.

Do you ever think 'where did we go wrong?' I always thought by the time I was 40 I'd have a personal masseur every day and a box of Kleenex in every room. (Yeah, well time was when loo roll had to do to wipe my nose!) So time passed, life got better and now I've got a box of Kleenex in every room. The masseur somehow didn't materialise and as for Big Boys' Toys...I missed the boat. Do I care? No way, José!

  1. It bothers me that so few are allowed to have so much. It really bothers me, it always did and it always will. This world is ridiculous.

  3. Fenix and Ann,

No, question, you are so right and perhaps I shouldn't put these excesses on Monte Carlo DP but this is a part of Monte Carlo life, especially around Grand Prix time. I try to present the city as it is and understand it must offend some people.

You should also know that whilst Monaco brings in big bucks to the Principality, there is an enormous amount of work done for AIDS, African children, Global warming, and much more - all of which the Prince and his sisters are very involved with.

You are so kind. As you know, I don't live in Monte Carlo (I live 11 kilometres away and so going to MC is like going on holiday and I try to see it objectively) I'm well aware tho of the total inequality of life when I see these excesses. Thanks for your understanding comments. I'll keep posting!

  6. Money can't buy happiness!! Just look at Paris Hilton.

Like you, I dreamed of wonderful, fabulous life when I was younger. But as I got older, I realized I want three things in life:

    1. Financial Security - I want to have enough money that I won't have to worry about money ever again. I'm not talking about being a billionaire. I think $2 mil in the bank is enough for me.

    2. Time - Most people I know who make millions of dollars don't have time to do anything else but work. And when they have some time off, they feel the need to maximize it by buying big cars, big boats and big helicopters.

    3. Health - As long as I don't have any chronic pain and am reasonably healthy, I'm fine.

    :-)

  7. N.B.: Kleenex in every room? What an odd wish. Actually, mine was owning a washer and dryer (machine) at home and never having to use the laundramat. Still working at it. No washer or dryer in my apartment. I should have shoot for something simplier like clean socks in the dresser. :-)

  9. Hi Jilly,

What offends me is the social and economic inequalities of our world, not your photos.

    Take care.
