Daily Photo Theme Day: Cemeteries/Tombstones

Monaco's cemetery is situated just below the Princess Grace Hospital. Not the greatest placement of a hospital, I'd venture to say. Perhaps there was no choice - the Principality of Monaco, after all, is very small. So there you are, sick in your hospital bed - you look out of the window and there before you is the glorious Mediterranean, but look down and you realise you are staring at descending terraces of graves. Several famous people are buried in the graveyard: Josephine Baker, the entertainer and Leo Ferré, the designer amongst them. This grave belongs to the Famille Ange Giordino. I'll post more photos from this beautiful cemetery over the coming days.

Today, being the 1st of the month, is Daily Photo Theme Day. Do please take time to visit the other cities in the Daily Photo family taking part in today's theme:

  4. Your commentary does make one pause a bit! It's a huge statue, and I wonder what the figure at the base is supposed to represent?

  5. I've already notice that French cemeteries very often are near an hospital...Very catholic, this huge statue, don't you think so?

  7. I did not finish my thought - to quote Woody Allen "It's not that I am afraid of dying, I just don't want to be there when it happens" ;-)

  9. Perhaps it is not such a depressing view to look out and see such a peaceful cemetery. I'm sure with the cemetery below the hospital, it means it is a little quieter for the patients.

    Great photo.

  10. This monument is inspiring! If I were seriously ill in that hospital and looked down upon this statue, I would probably contemplate the course of my life so far.

  11. A wonderful statue...I love them... and perhaps it was just easier to bury them from the hospital when they didn't improve!

  13. It's surprising so many cemeteries I'm seeing today with such great locations. Great exposure of the angel.

  15. The Giordinos must be a fairly prosperous family. The angel statue looks beautiful.

As for the hospital next to the cemetery, like you said, maybe there wasn't much choice to the matter.

  18. Exquisite. Would that we all had such an angel looking towards heaven for us. I must believe that we do, to tell you the truth.

  20. Léo Ferré is a singer, no? I guess the emplacement is quiet practical but oh so morbid!

  22. Touching, beseeching. Unlike the venus di milo, both arms still intact. Vandalism can be a problem.
