Monaco's cemetery is situated just below the Princess Grace Hospital. Not the greatest placement of a hospital, I'd venture to say. Perhaps there was no choice - the Principality of Monaco, after all, is very small. So there you are, sick in your hospital bed - you look out of the window and there before you is the glorious Mediterranean, but look down and you realise you are staring at descending terraces of graves. Several famous people are buried in the graveyard: Josephine Baker, the entertainer and Leo Ferré, the designer amongst them. This grave belongs to the Famille Ange Giordino. I'll post more photos from this beautiful cemetery over the coming days.

Maybe lookign out might inspire you to get better? I didn't know Josephine Baker was there.

elle est sobre et elle est tres belle avec cette lumiere. elle me fait un peu penser a la statue du Telethon qui se trouve à Evry.
ReplyDeleteNice perspective, with the statue reaching for the beautiful sky.
ReplyDeleteYour commentary does make one pause a bit! It's a huge statue, and I wonder what the figure at the base is supposed to represent?
ReplyDeleteI've already notice that French cemeteries very often are near an hospital...Very catholic, this huge statue, don't you think so?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sally - it would inspire me to get well sooner ;-)
ReplyDeleteI did not finish my thought - to quote Woody Allen "It's not that I am afraid of dying, I just don't want to be there when it happens" ;-)
ReplyDeleteSuch grace and beauty out of stone! Spectacular photo for our theme day. I just love it.

Perhaps it is not such a depressing view to look out and see such a peaceful cemetery. I'm sure with the cemetery below the hospital, it means it is a little quieter for the patients.
ReplyDeleteGreat photo.
This monument is inspiring! If I were seriously ill in that hospital and looked down upon this statue, I would probably contemplate the course of my life so far.
ReplyDeleteA wonderful statue...I love them... and perhaps it was just easier to bury them from the hospital when they didn't improve!
ReplyDeletegreat perspective, the hands reaching to the sky. very well done.
ReplyDeleteIt's surprising so many cemeteries I'm seeing today with such great locations. Great exposure of the angel.
ReplyDeleteNice shot Jilly. The perspective adds to her angelic-ness.
ReplyDeleteThe Giordinos must be a fairly prosperous family. The angel statue looks beautiful.
ReplyDeleteAs for the hospital next to the cemetery, like you said, maybe there wasn't much choice to the matter.
I like this picture. Good choice.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice place to be buried in...
ReplyDeleteExquisite. Would that we all had such an angel looking towards heaven for us. I must believe that we do, to tell you the truth.
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely photo, I love how she's framed by the clouds. Almost looks like she has a halo. :)
ReplyDeleteLéo Ferré is a singer, no? I guess the emplacement is quiet practical but oh so morbid!
ReplyDeletemmmm thats kinda scary hospital near a cemetery but it can inspire to get better however hehe.
ReplyDeleteTouching, beseeching. Unlike the venus di milo, both arms still intact. Vandalism can be a problem.
