The Donkey by G. K. Chesterton
When forests walked and fishes flew
And figs grew upon thorn,
Some moment when the moon was blood,
Then, surely, I was born.
With monstrous head and sickening bray
And ears like errant wings—
The devil's walking parody
Of all four-footed things:
The battered outlaw of the earth
Of ancient crooked will;
Scourge, beat, deride me—I am dumb—
I keep my secret still.
Fools! For I also had my hour—
One far fierce hour and sweet:
There was a shout around my head
And palms about my feet.
What a happy child...great photos.

What fun for the little one! Great pictures, Jilly!!
ReplyDeletethis is one extremely happy and adorable child and a mah-velously groomed donkey!! ahh the donkey for all it's undeserved cantankerous and stubborn, slow reputational nature still a fabulous gentle animal for children. Surely the donkey new it's cargo was a treasure!!
ReplyDeleteHow adorable. I rather like donkeys and it is nice to see just a tiny child on its back instead of some mammoth load.
ReplyDeleteLook at the happy face on that little one. Smile--a lesson learned.
ReplyDeleteGreat poem.
