Grand Prix - Truth

The Grand Prix wouldn't be the Grand Prix without a plethora of pretty girls.

Here's one who was working on one of the many stalls selling Grand Prix memorabilia. She was friendly and smiling yet in this photograph she looks pensive, with a quiet dignity. Photographs are so much of the moment - the instant we press that button, aren't they? Do they tell the truth or not?

  2. Cropping that photo as tightly as you did was right, Jilly. There's an intensity in that top photo that the other portrait doesn't match.

As for photos telling the truth, I think we are all made of dozens of intertwined truths. You caught one. There are so many more.

  3. Hi Jilly!
The truth? That depends... I see tabloid magazines "lying" all the time with deceptively out-of-context shots. Other times they are insightful, as this wonderful capture of yours... yes, quiet dignity. Beautiful...

  4. You ask a deep question. Of course photographs can lie. Even if not retouched, photos are subject to infinite varieties of lighting, focus, lens/camera combination and so on. At most, a photo captures a moment of existence, a la Cartier-Bresson. Is that truth? I never took epistemology so as they say (pun intended), who knows.

My read is that she looks slightly disdainful or contemptuous. There's a whole field of study of facial expressions and their relation to emotional states but I've been long-winded enough already.

  5. It would be interesting to spend an hour listening to what she thinks about life. Her eyes appear to contain such deep thoughts. Once again wonderful photos Jilly.
