The smaller photographs shows how close some of the yachts are to the track - others are a little further away and then, presumably, you'd need a pretty big boat to see what is going on.
(Thanks very much to Rick from Manhattan Beach, California for the following information)
The biggest boat in the photograph belongs to Flavio Briatore, owner of the Renault team and is called
Force Blue.To the left is Georgio Armani's yacht,
My Mariu apparently no longer used by him as he's bought another and it's up for sale. Click on the links to see more details of these yachts.
For me this is a wonderful series. I get to appreciate another's photography of such an iconic event, without the responsibility. I know how much hard work goes into putting together a running theme and to convey the excitement of the event. Stirling job and whets my appetite each day to be there one year in person.
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing how close these crafts are to the track... I know that the momentum of the racers is in the opposite direction to the boats, but there is recoil action if a car hits a wall and wouldn't this present a hazard to them?
ReplyDeleteIn any case, this seems a much better environment to enjoy racing (compared with NASCAR here in the US)...

Your tightly cropped photo of those huge yachts all squished together reminds me of the shot I did of Monaco apartments, remember? In both views there appears to be no open space, no trees, there's a sense of human presence so tightly packed that there's no room to breathe.
ReplyDeleteTo me, boats are about unlimited sea views and wide open spaces. None of that here, I'm afraid!
If you had the big boat, I don't think you would care what is going on.
ReplyDeletethis will be exciting. I hope I can view it on the television. The best view seems to be from these yachts, comfort and style seating.
ReplyDeleteForget sitting on the hillside, next year I'm bringing my yacht!
ReplyDeleteI like how the yachts sound their horns for the race winner in a big chorus!
ReplyDeleteWhen I went, I sat in a grandstand across from a row of big yachts. I was surprised at how many people on the yachts ignored the race.
And those certainly are some pretty big boats!! The height of luxury!
ReplyDeleteJilly,
ReplyDeleteThe boat you featured in the photo "FB" is Flavio Briatore's boat. The Italian playboy that runs the Renault F1 team.

Rick, thanks so much for that information. I've added it to the main copy with thanks to you. You are a star!
ReplyDeleteAll part of my effort to live vicariously through you while you visited this event!

every year you bring us the Grand Prix from the most interesting places ever ;)
ReplyDeleteI wonder how much it costs to rent a terrace for the three days?
Look how high up you are!!
The smaller picture can't be race day b/c the boats are made to push back a little bit ...
ReplyDeleteAlso, Mariu is no longer used by Armani ... He took delivery of a new yacht last year & Mariu has been for sale since then for I think around 26 Million Euros ... It's available for charter - $220,000/week [which is quite reasonable considering the amount of yachts on the charter market for $500,000+/week]
Though it may not be obvious ... But these are mid-size yachts in the pics ... All the larger superyachts are to big for Port Hercule & usually gather outside the harbor at anchor during the F1 race ... The larger yachts are usually kept along at IYCA in Antibes where they have larger berths compared to Monaco ... There are a couple of exceptions but that is generally true ...
Anon, actually I've mentioned on several postings that these photographs were taken on the Thursday. Just looking at how empty the stands are shows it's not race day too. I've adjusted the copy that goes with the photograph and thanks for your information on Armani's yacht. I don't know who to credit as you are Anonymous but thanks anyway.
ReplyDeleteYou could fit my apartment in the bar on Briatore's yacht.....
ReplyDeleteAwesome yacht photo. The view from the back yacht deck over the race with some wine or champagne and lunch . . . . C'est formidable! Regards from EAGAN daily photo in Minnesota, USA
