This is a similar marketing concept that Raymond Loewy, the father of industrial design, used when he came up with the name and logo for Exxon. The extra x, like the extra o in this sign, stops the eye and causes the viewer to take notice and remember.
This puzzled me at first. Something about wedding rings, perhaps with the gender of your choice? A lunar reference? No, probably just corporate graphics and marketing.
