Thanks Jilly! But "leo" (online dict.) doesn't find puit either... So now I looked into my paper dictionaries AND: English: well = Brunnen in German, French: puits = Brunnen. Life can be so easy... And further I found out that a well is a fountain without a "fountain" and that French for "fountain" is not "fontaine" but "jet d'eau"!! So these were my today's English + French lessons! ;-)) Barbara

This well seems to have a concrete cap, which I guess is a safe way to leave a well.
I looked up the word "well" in the online dictionnary.. 19 meanings for it! Is this one for taking out water??

Barbara, yes. The word is 'puit' in French.
