I have never crewed on a yacht, but as a teenager living in St. Louis, Missouri, I was a member of the Sea Scouts, which is a part of the Boy Scouts. Our small troop owned 2 small (16 feet or about 5 meters) sail boats that we kept on the wide part of the Mississippi River above Alton Lock & Dam, where the river is about 1 mile (1.6 km) wide.
Sailing in the Mississippi River was a challenge. Long barges came through every few minutes spreading a big wake that would rock the sailboats back and forth, knocking the wind out of the sails. It was a great experience.
