Marc Quinn at the Oceanographic Museum - Self
"Self" is a frozen sculpture of the artist's head made from 4.5 litres of his own blood, taken from his body over a period of 5 months. Described by Marc Quinn as a ‘frozen moment on life-support’, the work is carefully maintained in a refrigeration unit, reminding the viewer of the fragility of existence. The artist makes a new version of Self every five years, each of which documents Quinn’s own physical transformation and deterioration.
In 1999, all of Marc Quinn's ‘blood head’ self portraits were exhibited together. Each portrait is a documentation of the artist’s head, as it ages every five years, and so represents a portrait of the artist over a fifteen year period.
This is "gruesome" at the least, wonder what his wife has to say about this-Antique
ReplyDeleteWhat a very strange and interesting exhibit....but spooky for sure. It seems like it would be better placed in the "Chamber of Horrors' at Madame Tussauds!
ReplyDeleteOk, this is getting weird. But what ain't weird in Monaco? On the contrary, I think this exhibition has found his home, don't move it anymore!
ReplyDeleteRecalling your photo two days ago of the sculpture of the two people lying down and . . . . well, you know what they were doing, made me really nervous to open your post today because the thumbnail said that the title was "Self."
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised this exhibit was chosen for the M.O. Monaco. For such a beautiful location, it's disgusting.
ReplyDeleteI hardly need any documentation of my deterioration. Let's hope Mr. Quinn manages to avoid blackouts.
