Walk or ride up?

This is taken from the pedestrian street, Rue Princesse Caroline, in the port area. The steps (plus escalator) lead up to some narrow streets with little restaurants and eventually, to Monte Carlo's market in Places d'Armes.

Up we go...

There is an enormous carpark below the casino gardens - it goes down many many levels into the bowels of the earth, with exits and entrances on each corner. This is the escalator that brings you out just by the Café de Paris. The escalator doesn't move until you step on it and then, off you go. Escalators and lifts get everything moving in Monaco - ease from one level to another - although in this case it's simply to get out of the car park. There is a beautiful indoor garden just before this moving staircase. As I've perhaps said before, all parking in Monte Carlo is free for the first hour.

Escalier St. Cecile

Monaco is built on many levels. This stairway takes you from Monaco to Beausoleil. Some of the streets that border Monaco and Beausoleil are interesting in that one side of the street is Monaco and the other side is Beausoleil, France.

Boulevard Princesse Charlotte

These steps lead to Boulevard Princesse Charlotte which leads in turn to the Boulevard du Jardin Exotique (the beautiful cactus and succulent garden of Monaco). The tall building at the rear of the photograph is the block of apartments called the Le Millefiore, probably the tallest building in Monte Carlo.

Onward and upwards...

The tiny Principality of Monaco is built on many levels and this scene in Boulevard des Moulins is typical with steps leading from one street level to another. You will also find free public lifts all over the place, which makes life easier for residents coming home with their shopping. In addition, many buildings can be entered from the lower or the upper level.

Let's go shopping!

This is taken from the Galerie du Métropole. Click here to see the interior of this beautiful shopping centre. The steps and escalator leads up to the Casino gardens.
