Circus! - the photographer

Isn't this beautiful lady well dressed for a photographer? Look at the lot below - that's what I'd expect: jeans and a jacket. I watched her for a while - she always stood so elegantly - even when she bent down to take a photograph she didn't look awkward.

Circus! - the balloon man

I haven't a clue what this act is called but as you can see if you look at the individual photographs, he starts off with a balloon on his head and then pulls it down and gets in it! And then keeps popping up - well bits of him do. Rather peculiar...but clever.

Circus! - Bikers: Hard rock sur pneumatiques

You'd better believe the hard rock part. The decibels were incredible, the energy of the bikers just fabulous. They got into the list of winners at this, the 32rd international Festival of Circus in Monaco. Created in 1974 by Prince Rainier, this festival has become of the most important and prestigious in the world. The top award, the 'Clown d'Or' (not just for clowns) is considered by circus folk the supreme award in the world of circus. The bikers (I don't know their nationalities) won the Prix du cirque Kobsov de Kiev.

The President of the Festival is Princess Stephanie who adores circus and it plainly shows in everything she does for this event.

Circus! - the sealions

Here are the sealions. Personally, I don't visit the circus because of the animals. We have surely grown beyond all that and their exploitation. I did take some photographs of the elephants but I won't be publishing them. I thought them in poor condition and remember last year, when I saw them in their tent, one was rocking back and forth - not a happy camper. As for the big cats in their cages - no way.

However, my friend, whose apartment overlooks the circus, tells me she hears the sealions having the best fun in their area of water and certainly they looked happy to perform at this outdoor event.

First and last of the animals. Tomorrow - the bikers!

As an aside, and a very important one, Prince Albert has sent two leopards from the Monaco Zoo to the Born Free reserve in South Africa. There have been endless complaints over the years about the poor conditions in the zoo. I believe Virginia McKenna, from the Born Free foundation, campaigned for years to get the place closed, but in Prince Rainier's years, nothing was done. An elephant died, as well as a white tiger last summer and finally, at last, the zoo, as it was will come to an end. There is still a hippopotamus and a dromedary but presumably these will find a new home too.

Prince Albert plans a farm for children where they can come and see and pat donkeys, goats, sheep, rabbits etc. A far better idea. Good for the Prince!

Circus! - the ballet

The Troupe Freedom de Kiev - but introduced simply as The Ballet. They were fabulous - tons of energy, vibrant music and great fun.

Circus! - the clowns

Every January we see the Monte Carlo International Circus Festival which takes place in the beautiful circus tent in Fontvieille. Today, following tradition, there was an Open Air Circus Show on the port on Monaco. I couldn't get through the crowd looking down on the show, so walked down to the level where it was being held, right in front of the yachts in the harbour. It was worse - people standing ten deep and I'm a titch so didn't have a hope of seeing what was going on, let alone getting a photograph. Suddenly I saw a few people sneaking through a barrier. Naturally I did the same. An official stopped me. 'Just one photograph?' I asked. He agreed and turned away - by then he had many more people to deal with so I carried on walking and ended up standing near to the dignitaries and official photographers. In fact, at one point, I tried taking a photograph of some cute children who were standing alongside me until the bodyguard stopped me and I realised they were Princess Stephanie's children.

Sainte Dévote - 2

Here's a closer look at this lovely church. You can read about the legend of St. Dévote by clicking on the link.

Followers of the Monaco Grand Prix will know that the corner called St. Dévote is notoriously one of the most difficult and dangerous in the race.

Sainte Dévote - 1

This is one of the most beautiful churches in Monaco. The port is behind us. The overpass - the Voie Rapide - shadows the church and made it very difficult to photograph.

St. Dévote is the patron saint of the Grimaldi family and every January 27th, the Principality celebrates St. Dévote's Day as a national holiday. According to legend, during the Roman era a young Corsican Christian named Dévote was executed and her body placed in a boat for Africa. The boat drifted off course and ran aground on the coast of modern-day Monaco, where a state was founded in her honor. The Chapel, originally built in the 11th century, is at the site where, in the 4th century, the boat with St. Dévote's body landed. At the end of the 19th century, the chapel was restored, enlarged and given a new, monumental façade. Every January 26th, a boat is burnt on its square at nightfall in the presence of the royal family.

Girl on a Motorcycle

No, not the Alain Delon/Marianne Faithful movie - just a little girl on her father's motorbike. This was taken near to the church of St. Devote.

Talking of children and parents, Nice-Matin is reporting today on INSEE, which is the National Institute for Statistics. In their latest census they report that one child in two is born outside of wedlock in France. I've no idea of the statistics for Monaco. Do you know the statistics in your country?

Hippopotame

A massive great hippopotamus suddenly appeared in Casino Square just before Christmas. It's a bronze by the artist Mornar and is on the Café de Paris side of the square. In fact, as you come up out of the underground parking - boom - there it is and pretty impressive too.

Pretty money

Isn't this a pretty bank? I posted the front of this building once before - here is a detail from the side. It stands opposite Casino Square and looks down on the casino, which I suppose is as good a place as any for a bank.

The beautiful Tea House in the peaceful Japanese Garden on avenue Princesse Grace.

La Vigie -2

This photograph shows the beautiful white house in the foreground - La Vigie - which you saw yesterday. It stands on the promontory called Pointe de la Vieille. This is the boundary between Monaco and Roquebrune-cap-Martin. You can read more in yesterday's post.

La Vigie

This beautiful house stands, as you can see below, just above the Monte Carlo Beach Hotel on a promontory of land called Pointe de la Vieille. The land was originally leased by the SBM of Monaco, and later in 1926 they bought it. The Pointe de la Vieille marks the eastern boundary of Monaco and France. In 1902, Sir William Ingram, a rich English baronet - who incidentally owned the Château of Roquebrune at one time - built this beautiful white house, La Vigie, when it was considered one of the finest houses on the Riviera. Following his death, and years later, after many disputes over the land, the house became the property of the SBM. It remained vacant for years until 1986 when, following restoration, it was lived in by the designer, Karl Lagerfeld until 1997. Monte Carlo Beach Hotel - 2

You've seen this hotel before but only from a far greater distance. On the promontory in the background is the Restaurant La Vigie - a divine place to sip a glass of champagne before dining with the lights of Monte Carlo before you. This hotel on the eastern edge of Monaco, on land, so far as I know, leased from France. On the hillside above La Vigie - and hidden in the trees - are summer huts that can be rented for the season. I have friends who years ago used to rent one of these and spent lazy days meeting up with friends and their children and lunching on the beach. What a life!

No swimming

Pensive

This sculpture 'Pensive' is by Emma de Sigaldi and is placed very near to the Carrefour shopping centre in Fontvieille, the area of Monaco reclaimed from the sea. The new port of Fontvieille is just across the roundabout you see in the background.

Let there be light

As you walk around Monaco, you'll sometimes see apartments with their balaconies covered in foliage - not for privacy, I'd venture to say, but to keep out traffic noise. This apartment is on Avenue de la Madone which rises up from the Casino area.

Japanese Garden - 12

An interesting bridge in these beautiful peaceful gardens. I did consider using it for our Bridge Theme day - anyway here it is today.

Stretch!

Stretch that leg! This young man is ready to run. You'll see many people jogging in Monte Carlo. In the background you see a part of the Church of St. Devote, a beautiful church and one you'll read more about soon.

Dressed

The pedestrian street of Monaco, rue Princesse Caroline, dressed for the holiday period. The main port is behind us.

Hôtel de Paris - detail

A detail from the exterior of the beautiful Hôtel de Paris. The hotel, one of the grandest in the world, was built in 1864 by Dutrou. Opulent in decor and gracious in manner, this nineteenth century 'palace' has been home to royalty and the world's brightest luminaries. Green space

Monaco seems so built up when you see it from a distance. And it is. But there are many beautiful gardens throughout the Principality, some quite large - others are simply a small area of green with pathways allowing you to get from one place to another. This pretty little area is below the casino with the main port off to the right.

Theme Day: photo of the year - 2007

This was taken at the Children's Fair at dusk in the port of Monaco - I loved the bouncing boy and wished I were him! Somehow, too, he seems a positive symbol for the New Year - onwards and upwards! Another choice for today would have been a photo taken later that same night - Fireworks over the Port of Monaco - one of the few night shots that's worked for me. Not technically correct - but perhaps acceptable for a Point and Shoot camera.

This has been a year when I've discovered the world of photography and that I just love taking photographs, composing shots, trying to tell a story. Much to learn technically though, and I'm so grateful for the generous encouragement and great advice from so many of you - my fellow City Bloggers - THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Prince Albert I

This statue, standing outside the Palais Princier on Le Rocher, was created in 1914 by Constant Roux in hommage to Prince Albert 1st of Monaco and to commemorate the 25th year of his reign.

Albert I, an eminent scientist and seaman, was the creator of the magnificent Monaco Oceanographic Museum and also the Paris Oceanography Institute. He was the great-grandfather of the current Prince of Monaco, Prince Albert II.

Bonnie and Clyde

This looks like it might have been in an old Chicago-style gangster movie, or perhaps Bonnie & Clyde - but I've probably got it all wrong. No idea what the make of this car is or how old. Am sure someone will help me. Fabrizio? It was outside a garage along with a Lincoln Continental.

Japanese Garden - 11

After the chaos of Christmas, contemplation in the Japanese garden. Wherever you look in this beautiful garden, there is peace. Most of the earlier photographs of the Japanese garden have the sea as background. This shows just how near it is to the apartment buildings along Avenue Princesse Grace - just across the street.

From Roquebrune village

As soon as you go drive into the hills and away from Monaco, you'll get a different view of the Principality. In this photograph, Monaco is in the distance and nearer you see the villas leading down to the beach in Roquebrune-cap-Martin. The paragliders jump off the mountains way up to the right and land on this beach below.

Fire!

Only kidding. There was no fire. I really don't know why the fire truck was here - in Fontvieille, opposite the circus tent. The apartment buildings are on land reclaimed from the sea.

Lamppost

Lamppost decoration for Christmas. Quite subtle, I think you'll agree.

You can see the side of the Casino building ahead - the beautiful doorway is the entrance to the Salle Garnier which is the Opera house. The Hôtel de Paris is on the left and the main port of Monaco is below us, on the right.

Happy Christmas, Charlie Brown!

The Europa is a large, luxury apartment building on Boulevard des Moulins. In the foyer is a large Christmas tree and at its base, two smaller trees, each hung with photographs of children - children who live in the building. Isn't that nice?

Landing

This will be a very busy area today, with helicopters ferrying passengers from Nice airport to the Heliport of Monaco in time for Christmas. You can see Cap Martin in the distance. Menton is beyond that.

Through a child's eyes

We're in the Metropole Shopping Centre near to the Casino. So many displays for a child to enjoy. Did you father ever take you somewhere special at Christmas?

Monte Carlo Ladies - 9

I was coming up the escalator this morning from the Metropole shopping centre and this lady crossed my path. I ran up, pulling my camera out of my bag as I did so. She stopped for a second to speak to the doorman of the Metropole Hotel (you can just see him on the left) and then, on she went, walking too fast for a close-up. I thought about trimming this photo right back to lady herself but thought perhaps it gave more interest to show her, en route to wherever she is going, and of course, with 'that hat!'

Tree of trees

Not just one tree, but made up of dozens of smaller trees. I have forgotten the number - could have been over a hundred. The Christmas tree looks strange to me amongst the palm trees of Casino Square. I took a photograph of it the other evening but the lights and my camera came to blows and it wasn't a good photograph.

Service with a smile!

I had to pop in to Monaco today and so took advantage of the trip and went shopping at Carrefour, the big supermarket, in Fontvieille. Carrefour is better - by far - than any supermarket that Menton has to offer. It's fun shopping here. The food is fabulous - so fresh, the service is great and anyway it's nice to look at all the beautiful people. It's amazing who you bump into as you walk down the aisles.

Today, tho, they are offering an extra service. This is the escalator that goes down to the carpark and as you enter, with your fully laden trolley, these two friendly people, offer to come down with you and load up your car. Isn't that nice? I'm sorry the photo isn't very good. I took another looking back at this couple and they posed for me brilliantly but it's blurred. I'd got the wrong settings. Wrap on knuckles for Jilly.

And did I take advantage of their offer? Well, no I didn't. I like to transfer stuff slowly to bags and boxes but it was nice to be asked.

Metropole at Christmas - A letter to Santa

La Poste de Monaco replies to all letters sent to Father Christmas. Children can post their letters in this special box in the Metropole Shopping Centre or in any public mailbox in Monte Carlo. Monaco Post Office has 5000 cards - written by Santa Claus, bien sûr - ready printed to send out in reply. According to Nice-Matin, they've already received over 200 letters, some quite moving where children ask for gifts to be sent to more needy children. One joker, doubtless an adult, asked for a Ferrari and a yacht. He got a reply telling him that 'There isn't enough room in Le Père Noël's sack!'

A duck for Christmas?

Don't know about you but I need a break from the commercialism of Christmas so here's the pond in the Casino gardens.

I watched these three ducks waddle, very quickly, along the path - slip into the water and make a beeline for this central area. I 'think' a tyre is buried just below the surface of the water and presumably that's where the ducks are fed. They appear to be diving for food, don't they?

Metropole at Christmas

Just off to the right, on the lowest level, is FNAC: the shop in France where you can get CDs, DVDs, books, all-things-computer, cameras, etc. I love it and when I visit, usually grab a coffee and a brioche sucré in the space you see below. Great people-watching place it is too.

Metropole at Christmas - Teddy Bears

Looks like the Metropole shopping centre has a Christmas bear theme: a polar bear yesterday, today teddy bears. This display is at the entrance below the escalators that descend from the Casino gardens. Not easy to photograph because they are skating bears and as we know, skating bears not only go round and round in circles, but they spin at the same time...and very fast. Every time I clicked, I ended up with the back of a bear or a side view. Got it eventually. Happy skating!

Metropole at Christmas - Polar Bear

Well, you'd expect Monaco to do Christmas BIG - and it has. This is one end of one level of the luxurious Metropole shopping centre. This table is used by one of the restaurants. Quite fun to share a table with a polar bear!

Monte Carlo Ladies - 8

Of course my Monte Carlo ladies, aren't always ladies who live in Monaco. I would imagine this glamorous lady is a visitor to the Principality - and I hope that's not real fur!

Here she is, with her man, looking in the VERY expensive jewellery shop next to the Café de Paris on Casino Square.

Monaco

This is Monaco taken from the medieval village of Roquebrune. I went up there today to photograph the village for Menton Daily Photo. In this photograph, you can see le Rocher (the Rock) in the background. This is the oldest area of Monaco and is where you'll find the Palace and the Oceanographic museum and of course the oldest streets in Monaco.

Beyond the Rocher - an area you can't see in this photograph - is Fontvieille, which is the part of Monaco reclaimed from the sea.

You can see the main port of Monaco, this side of the Rocher, and nearer to us still is the area where you'll find the casino - that's slightly to the right of the edifice, built out to sea, which used to be called Lowe's Hotel but is now known as the Fairmont Monte Carlo.

The boundary of Monaco and France is more or less the Monte Carlo Bay Resort which you can see on the promontory that juts out to sea - before the rugged coast line which is France. Indeed, the houses on the hillside in the foreground are in Roquebrune-cap-Martin, France.

Cycas revoluta

This plant with amazing seeds is just outside the circus tent - to be exact, outside the toilets. I think it's a female cycas revoluta but am sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

I stepped onto the grass to take this photograph and got told off by an official.
'I'm only taking a photograph,' I said.
'Well you are not allowed on the grass' he said.
'Dogs go onto the grass,' I said.
'Well they are dogs,' he said...

Okay, okay, so dogs can't read.
