Stars 'N' Bars - the Presidential 'Lookalikes'

Meet the 'lookalike' (well, sort of ...) presidenttal candidates who were at Stars 'N' Bars for their great election night party. There was a stroll poll with prizes every hour and the Stars 'N' Bars clientele gave Obama 88% of the vote.  Stars 'N' Bars have organised an election party every four years for the past twenty and every time their clients name the president several hours before it actually happens!

Election Night in Monte Carlo - Stars 'N' Bars

There was only one place to be in Monaco last night - Stars 'N' Bars on the port.  I called in to take a few photos - there were Obama and Romney lookalikes!  There was a bear who gave free hugs and an enormous television screen showing CNN all night long. And loads and loads of enthusiasm.  A great atmosphere ...

And isn't this the biggest American flag you've ever seen?

And Obama won!  Thank you, America!

More tomorrow ...

Monte Carlo Bay Hotel and Resort

We're looking at a couple of cabanons and a smsll part of the beautiful pool at the Monte Carlo Bay Hotel and Resort. Note the high seas smashing against the shore in the background - and top right part of the Monte Carlo Beach Hotel.

The Cute Red Car

Not the usual Ferrari or Rolls Royce that you often see in Monaco.  I wonder what make this cute little car is. Perhaps it's a kit car?

Anyone know?

High Seas and La Vigie

Churning seas in front of the Monte Carlo Beach Hotel.  This is technically France (Roquebrune-Cap-Martin) - but the Pointe de la Vieille, on which stands the hotel and the tall cream building, was bought by the SBM in Monaco in 1926.  The tall building is La Vigie, built in 1902, for Sir William Ingram. In recent years it was lived in by Karl Lagerfeld and now I believe is offered for rent. You can read more about La Vigie by clicking on the link.

A Run on the Beach

A day of endless rain and wind two days ago turned into this - yesterday.  Sunshine, high seas (for the Mediterranean) and a run along Larvotto Beach.

The Water's Edge

As you walk along the port of Fontvieille, don't just look at the luxury yachts - peer into the water.

You never know what you might see ...

Autumn at Lanvin

The Lanvin windows are always fun.  When it's time for a new window display, do you suppose a designer in Paris sends insructions to all the Lanvin shops of the world - so they are all the same?   Or perhaps each local shop, such as this one in Casino Square, does its own thing?

Art Nouveau?

This entrance is below the casino building, the side of which you can see lit up pink for the recent Pink Ribbon Monaco evening.   It's perhaps a private gaming area - for the high rollers.   Don't you love the wrought iron and glass canopy - Art Nouveau or in that style ...

Princess Grace's Wedding Dress made of Diet Coke Cans

This sculpture based on Princess Grace's wedding dress was created to commemorate the 30th anniversary of her death.  The dress is made of thousands of pieces of aluminium, using 4,000 cans of Coca-Cola Light (Diet Coke) in a unique design and intricate weave inspired by the magnificent fine lace original wedding gown.  It took over 2 years to complete.

The sculpture, by Nikos Floros, is on display in the foyer of the Hotel Metropole and is 10 feet long, 5.5 feet wide and 6.5 feet tall.

Reni

On the night the casino was lit up pink, I met Reni in the Casino Gardens. She wears wonderfully original clothes - and is obviously a character.  She immediately went into 'pose mode' when I asked to take her photo. Thanks Reni!

The HĂŽtel Hermitage

We seem to be looking at a lot of hotels lately, don't we? No surprise because if you walk around the Casino area, which is what we've been doing, that's where the most prestigious hotels are to be found.

In 1900 the modest establishment of the HĂŽtel Hermitage was transformed into a luxurious residence for visitors. Its Belle Epoque dining-room was the work of Gabriel Ferrier, winner of the  Rome Prize and gold medallist at the Universal Exhibition of 1889. It boasted magnificent frescoes recalling paintings by Fragonard and Boucher. The structure of the glass roof in the Winter Garden was designed by the renowned Gustave Eiffel, father of the tower in Paris which bears his name.  Click on the link to see this glass roof which is stunning.
